Publisher's summary

Liam Luckett is on an adventure. He's dropped out of his master's program without telling his overbearing parents and set off on a road trip across the country. Armed with little more than his guitar, he's looking for his best life. He never expected his car to break down in the middle of nowhere Vermont with a huge storm pending, leaving him stranded and at the mercy of a hunky local mechanic.

Jasper Cunningham is in a holding pattern. Three years after the death of his husband, he still hasn't moved on. A hot, younger stranded tourist is exactly the sort of complication this mechanic has been avoiding. But he also can't leave him in the snow. He brings Liam home and lets him sleep on the couch. The air is heavy with more than snow, and when the power goes out, the two men become closer than either of them expects.

Every silken note Liam sings on that guitar thaws Jasper's heart a little. Suddenly, Liam's itchy feet aren't so eager to move on. When their feelings get too big to ignore, the bond they've formed is tested. Will daybreak leave them going their separate ways?

Contains mature themes.

Very heart warming and enjoyable

I have listened to and enjoyed a few Kate Hawthorne books so I had faith that I would enjoy this one too...thanks to the performances of Kale Williams and Kirt Graves - each brought out and enhanced aspects of Jasper and Liam's story that kept me listening. I felt the coldness of Vermont and I've never been there. I experienced the grief of the anger and loss of a spouse and I've never been married. I even felt the anxiety of coming out to a father that has high expectations and ignores anything you have to say about what you want. There was a little spice - although a bit muted compared to other Hawthorne books I have listened to but it was still delicious. I finished this book feeling warm and happy.

4 stars - I would listen again.

Another great additional to the V&V series.

I was immediately intrigued by Jasper when we met him in Unguarded by Jay Hogan. So immediately had to listen to Jaspers story. A gruff and grumpy widower meets bubbly happy sunshine and sparks fly. Liam is all light and life and Jasper fights the pull he feels initially but after being a widower for 3 years he finally admits it’s time to experience life again.
Liam has his own issues to work out but as they come together. Their personalities bring these two men together at the perfect time for both of them. Wonderful narration. Wonderful story.

Vermont

Oh boy oh boy. This one had me smiling ear to ear. Especially since it was about Jasper. Loved it from front to back! I need more!

Narration is good

If you miss the true north series and feel like listening to something sweet, included in audible plus, with good narration, and lovable characters this book will work for you. Not much really happens, the characters barely speak about anything but fall in love in a week. It was just...cute and simple.

Good story, too short

Jasper was better developed as a character because he appeared in a previous book, but I feel like Liam needed a little more depth. Still a great read, but it felt like the middle of the book was missing. I would have liked to see a more prolonged period of falling in love and more butterflies.

meh

I wanted to listen to this as soon as I finished 'Unguarded' by Jay Hogan. I was excited to hear Jasper's story. I agree with other reviews that it's neither the plot nor Liam's character are realized enough. Jasper was so distraught in 'Unguarded ' but here it feels like he just woke up one day, was over his husband and picked the first guy he saw. I wanted more for him. The narrators were good, but for continuity's sake it annoyed me that Ty didn't have a NZ accent, especially when they managed to keep Auden's Scottish brogue.

New beginnings

Sweet mm romance about loss and starting over. Coming out to parents and making life changes. Well written and a great performance by Kirt Graves and Kale Williams, they really brought this story and all of the characters to life. Very enjoyable and entertaining.

Starting Over

3.5*

This was a sweet story about starting over, for both main characters.
I'm always so conflicted when a story features a character grieving their dead spouse, and trying to start over. I wonder sometimes if that's even really possible. But I think it must be, for most anyway, and I think it's probably necessary for many as well.
I thought Liam was sweet and just who Jasper needed to start living again.

Kale and Kirt were great, I really like them both!

Daybreak

The story was good, but the writing left me a little underwhelming. I wish the author would’ve touched on more on Liam, and his life, and the outcome of his decision to stay left the story hanging.
