Moo U #4

Holdout

Rate this book
Jonah Daniels has enough work preparing for his hockey season without spending time interviewing a roommate to help share expenses. So when some dude answers J.D.’s ad and agrees to his terms, he puts a key under the mat and leaves for practice.

What he doesn’t expect is that his new roommate is not a dude at all, but an overtalkative, energetic hottie. What’s worse? She’s the younger sister of his friend on the team, and she’s sworn him to secrecy.

Ryann Reiner needs a place to live, stat. After an incident at the dorms that almost tanked her scholarship, Ryann wants a boring roommate who’ll leave her alone. J.D. almost fits the bill. He lives and breathes hockey, just like her brother, and he wouldn’t know a joke unless it hip checked him against the boards.

He’s also gorgeous. And broody. And he looks fine on laundry day, in too little clothing. Soon, late-night study sessions turn into dangerous flirting. And then a kiss turns into more. But they’re determined to keep things in the feelings-free zone.

Until lines blur and tensions rise when Ryann’s brother learns the truth. And both their hearts are skating on thin ice...

Oh, I just loved this book! I jumped at the chance to listen to this audiobook because I just cannot seem to resist a good hockey romance. Set it in the World of True North and it is even more appealing. I had a fantastic time escaping life for a while with this book and found myself looking forward to listening to it during every free moment I could find. I fell hard for Jonah and Ryann and am so glad that I decided to give this book a try.

Jonah and Ryann both need a roommate. A bit of confusion over names leads to the pair sharing an apartment. Jonah has a list of rules to go with their new living arrangement and is determined to make sure that they both follow those rules. To complicate matters more, Ryann happens to be the little sister of a member of Jonah's hockey team. They have both been through quite a bit in life and have a lot in common and they both have a lot at stake. Jonah is very focused on hockey while Ryann is determined to do well in school and keep her scholarship.

I loved Jonah and Ryann as a couple. These two had fantastic chemistry together and they seemed to really understand each other. It felt like they were just meant to be together. I enjoyed every moment of watching them fall for each other and they stole my heart in the process. It was evident how much they cared for each other and I loved the way that they sometimes pushed each other just a bit.

Jason Clarke and Savannah Peachwood did a fantastic job with the narration of this book. I think that they both were able to bring their characters to life and I loved how much emotion they were able to add to the story. I thought that their voices complimented each other very well in this romance. I believe that their narration added to my overall enjoyment of this book.

I would highly recommend this book to fans of hockey romances. I had a fantastic time with this book and cannot wait to read more of Jaqueline Snowe's work and future installments in the Moo U Hockey series.

I received a digital review copy of this audiobook from the author/publicist.

Initial Thoughts
Oh, I just loved this book. Jonah and Ryann both need roommates and a bit of confusion leads to them sharing an apartment. Ryann also happens to be the little sister of a senior player on Jonah's hockey team. They have both been through a lot in their lives and are doing their best to move on. They each have a lot at stake. Jonah is focused on hockey and Ryann is determined to do well in school and keep her scholarship no matter what. Jonah and Ryann were meant to be together and the chemistry between the pair was off the charts. I thoroughly enjoyed watching these two fall for each other and they completely stole my heart in the process. The audiobook narration was wonderfully done and helped bring the story to life.

Book #3 in the Moo U series.
Jonah and Ryann.
He needs a roommate and she needs a place to live.
He thinks Ryan with one N is a boy. But she has two Ns. LOL.
Plus she's the very off-limits little sister of his team captain.
But they just click. They have so much in common ... and are very attracted to each other ... but we can stay just friends, right?

LET THE FUN TIMES BEGIN! ☺

Soo cute.

Funny, sweet and heartbreaking. Colleg-y and hockey-y.
I loved reading this.
The whole roommate situation and the off-limits teammate's sister thing. We just know that it's not going to work without them falling for each other. LOL!

I could read these kinds of books every day for the rest of eternity!

I also wouldn't mind seeing this whole world on Netflix one day!

Can't wait to get more Vermont soon!

HOLDOUT was such an adorable + funny hockey-y + college-y accidental-roommate romance! I loved reading it! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Jonah - he'll be sold out in no time!

Audiobook Review
Overall 4.5 stars
Performance 5 stars
Story 4 stars

I am a huge fan of the forced proximity roommate trope and Holdout definitely hit the spot. Add in some taboo/forbidden (teammate's little sister) and the ever favorite grump + sunshine trope and I was sold. Jonah and Ryann were oh so sexy together and I loved the push and pull between them. They both have had to overcome difficult events in their pasts (see CW below) and I appreciated that the author didn't gloss over how complicated grief and healing can be. The drama was a bit predictable, but it was understandable given their histories. The narration by Jason Clarke and Savannah Peachwood was absolutely stellar and they complemented each other so well. I love how versatile they both are and I truly could listen to Jason Clarke all day long. *swoon*

A great addition to the World of True North Moo U series and I can't wait to read more from Jaqueline Snowe!

This is my first read from Jaqueline Snowe so I went into this book not knowing what I was going to get. But since it's part of the Moo U series I had to read it. Especially after having read the last two and enjoying them.

This book felt less connected to the series than the others had. They have the same secondary characters just without any crossover with the other couples. However, I kind of understand that since both Jonah and Ryann were introverts who had been through a lot of things over the last few years.

The story was great and I really enjoyed the way the relationship developed. It was all really well paced and felt like it all happened organically. And the writing style was easy to get lost in.

I can't wait to see who's next in the Moo U series and I am really looking forward to all the other books in the Sarina Bowen, True North world.

STORY

Jonah wants to rent out a room in his off-campus apartment. Being on the hockey team and on a scholarship he can't afford distractions so he has a set of rules that are obligatory for his future room mate. Enter Ryann. Who, of course, is a girl, with an N too many and a missing appendage that would make her an eligible roommate. Jonah doesn't realize this little mix-up until it's too late. Ryann being the sister of the Moo U hockey team's captain makes things even more complicated.

This forbidden romance was such a hoot. I adored Jonah who is so focused and appeared to be such a grouch in the beginning but meeting Ryann with her sunny, optimistic disposition turned him into a real dreamboat. He was understanding, patient and listened to her dreams and fears. And Ryann brought the best out of him. The were yin and yang and absolutely adorable. These two had insane chemistry and while their friendship was the basis of their relationship their attraction was the spice.

NARRATION

Jason Clarke is one of the best male narrators out there so there is zero hesitation when I see a book narrated by him. His voice is one of those that can read the most boring text and still make it sound sexy. Savannah Peachwood is a fan favorite, just not mine. I can't pin it down but she doesn't always sound as natural as other narrators. That said, she does a decent job narrating Ryann.

BOTTOM LINE

This is my first book by Jaqueline Snowe and I'll be reading more by her. Her words are crisp and fit the genre.
The True North world has become one of my favorite places to be. Sarina Bowen has created a solid and fleshed out basis for other authors to set their stories in. Jaqueline Snowe's HOLDOUT was a an awesome addition. I hope there'll be a story about Ryann's big brother, he needs to fall. Hard.

Shenanigans!! and I love it! I cannot believe how much fun I have had reading the first three books in the Moo U series! New Adult romances are not my go-to. Ever. Three back-to-back? Unheard of, until now! :)

Holdout turned out to be quite entertaining because not only the premise of surprise roommate but also Jonah and Ryann’s personalities. The choices the author made for them made them click in a way where I felt attached to them or rather could see myself in their circle. That’s something I always like to see in my reads. I like to know that if I wanted to, I could be friends with the leads. It allows me to connect better with their story. I connected just fine with these two! I enjoyed the pace of the story and the unfolding and even the conflict. It’s not a new story by any means, but I like the author’s voice a lot and I’m looking forward to adding some of her backlist to my TBR!

OHHHHH! I am living for this swoony and sweet hero!!!

In my own words:

Holdout by Jaqueline Snowe is the third book in the Moo U series. This novel centers around Jonah and Ryann, newly room mated under a miscommunication and a name mishap. Ahhh, I love when fate intervenes and takes love into her own hands. It’s never a dull moment, that’s for damn sure.

Jonah is trying to make a name for himself on the Moo U hockey team. His determination to be the best is the only thing on his mind. He lives his life on the straight and narrow. If he’s not studying hard, he’s training. His life and his father’s financial well being lays in the palms of his hand….no pressure, right?

Ryann, the little sister to the captain of the Moo U hockey team, is looking to move out of her dorm as soon as possible. She’s done living the chaotic lifestyle and she needs to prove to her older brother she has the ability to be independent and survive on her own. When a ‘roommate wanted’ ad falls into her lap, she takes the chance and her offer is accepted.

Rooming with one another isn’t the hard part for Ryann and Jonah. The hard part is fighting fate and the undeniable chemistry that flows between the two of them. The hard part is Ryann keeping her promise to her brother and Jonah staying focused on what matters most to him. But when lines start to merge and feelings begin to get mixed up in the equation, Ryann and Jonah are about to realize, the outside world doesn’t matter as much as it once did.

My Thoughts:

Jaqueline Snowe DELIVERED!!!!
Jonah stole my heart with his boy next door vibes.
Ryann stole my heart with her tenacity and her drive to find her own way in life.
I loved these two together!!!

This is the first novel I have read by Jaqueline Snowe, and judging from my love for her story line, her characters, and her writing style I can safely say this won’t be the last time I pick up a novel by this author!!! I loved the dynamic of this novel. Ryann and Jonah’s chemistry is off the charts. I really enjoyed the fat that they established a friendship before jumping in between the sheets. Their chemistry slowly built until there was nothing left but to accept their blatant attraction to one another.

Their relationship didn’t come without it’s issues though. You see, Ryann made a promise to her brother, she would never again get involved with one of his teammates… but as we’ve come to learn, some promises are meant to be broken. Throughout this novel, there is that hint of doom. The expectation of not if but when her brother finds out about her and Jonah. This is the epitome of the words, recipe for disaster. I’m not going to lie, I was nervous as hell waiting for that impending doom-ish moment. I knew it was coming and I only hoped Ryann’s brother would let his sister do what was right for herself and the man didn’t let me down.

I loved the fact that both Ryann and Jonah found their person. They found someone they could share all their secrets and all their fears with. I loved that they leaned on one another during the hard times. I loved watching them grow into stronger individuals.

Now onto why I rated this a four star instead of a full star rating.
You see, I loved this novel and the characters, but I would have loved to see Jonah step up to the plate a bit more when it came to he and Ryann’s relationship. I wanted to see him fight more for her. I wanted him to go toe to toe with all those who dare try to stand in his way. I guess what I’m trying to say is I wanted more from him. Don’t get me wrong, I know he’s this focused kid. His overall personality is the boy next door who does no wrong and lives his life on a schedule. But the glimpses of the alphamale in between the sheets, had me hoping like hell this man would step up a bit more.

Overall, Holdout is a great addition to the Moo U series! I honestly loved the connections and the chemistry. And given a few nit picky issues, I have to say, this is one romance I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. This novel has all the swoon and so much heart!!

Oooooooh, I loved Jonah & Ryann; their story gave me all the feels. Theirs is a roommates to lovers story (and Ryann’s brother is also captain of the Moo U hockey team that Jonah is on!)
I absolutely adore JD. He wasn’t your typical hockey player; instead he was sweet and sensitive and slightly socially awkward. I loved how Ry brought him out of himself and their friendship that developed first was truly lovely.
Can’t wait to read more in the Moo U series - I’m so intrigued about the twins, Paxton & Patrick.

Friends and roommates with benefits to lovers, ICU 👀

I read The Puck Drop and Off the Ice (more recently), so I was somewhat familiar with Ryann and Jonah's characters. However I was curious about their story (and what Michael was like pre Naomi, heh) so I decided to read this! It's a charming book and if you enjoy the grumpy/sunshine and hurt/comfort tropes too, I definitely recommend it!

Ryann Reiner can't risk to lose her scholarship because her dorm roommate keeps drug and alchool in their room so she needs a new accomodation as soon as possible. Jonah Daniels needs to find a new roommate after the last guy went away without any notice. Thanks to a misunderstanding their lives collide, Ryann replies to Jonah's AD mistaking him for a girl and Jonah accepts her application thinking she is a guy. When they meet at the house they are shocked, because they not only are of differnt sex but they also know each other. Even if it isn't the best choice to share an appartment with your teammate's baby sister Jonah can't be picky because he needs a roommate to share the rent so he accepts but not until they set some rules. Jonah is focused to not lose his place in the hockey team that grants him a scholarship and Ryann needs to show her brother and only family member she has that she can be independent so even if they feel a strong attraction between each other they try to resist it. Will they complicate their lives giving in to temptation? Or will the risk to lose everything they worked so hard is too high and they behave as simple roommates?

This is a success for me.
Ryann and Jonah are two beautiful battered souls that fortunately fate made to meet. I loved their relationship, how they become friends and they trust each other with their secrets and emotions, they help each other growing up and to understand that no one can carry the weight of the world alone, life is so much more happy and easy if it's shared.

I've enjoyed Jaqueline Snowe writing, she was able to balance angst and fun perfectly making the reading smooth and absorbing. I laughed and teared up for these characters and I couldn't wait to read their happy ending.

I recommend to read this story, you won't be sorry!!

Holdout was another fun addition to the Moo U series!

I loved the connection between Ryann and Jonah. I was drawn to their fun dynamic instantly. I loved the way Ryann stood her ground with Jonah, and wasn't at all impressed with him. And I loved the way that won him over, earned his trust, and drew him to her.

That said, it was a little uneven for me. There were moments where the romance (and the ongoing conflict surrounding it) felt a little forced to me. Those moments sort of set me outside of the story, and I felt a little disconnected to it. Other times I felt crazy connected to it. When the conflict came to a head and emotions exploded everywhere? Mine did too. So I kind of felt pulled into and pushed out of the story - but overall, I really enjoyed it.

I also felt like Ryann and Jonah were a little sexier than the previous books. They brought the steam and honestly for me? It felt very organic. Usually that sort of connection is a turn-off for me, but it balanced so well against the feelings they were fighting so hard, and the genuine affection they showed each other, that in this case - it totally worked for me. They were super sweet and smokin' hot.

I loved how these stories feature familiar names (and sometimes places) while completely standing on their own. This was another fun foray into Moo U, and I am thoroughly enjoying my time here! ~ Shelly, 3.5 Stars

This is probably a case of "It's not the book, it's me" but I had a really hard time getting through this story. For all the time we spend in each character's head in first person POV (and it's a lot), I couldn't connect with the characters. It's not deep POV because we're told how the characters feel, in case there is any doubt from descriptions. Everything is presented through a filter, so I had no doubt that I was reading a story rather than being immersed in it. I don't know if the author just doesn't trust her own writing, or she doesn't trust us readers to understand.

I wanted to like this story so much more than I actually did. But you can't love every book and my disappointment will definitely NOT keep me from reading more in this shared universe.

With each Moo U book I read I fall more and more in love with this world.
I want to live there, go to school there, work there, date the strapping hockey players there....

You get the idea.

Jonah and Ryann need to solve their living situations.
One little name mix-up and a set of rules later, they think they've found the answers to their problems.

Sparks fly almost immediately, AND I AM HERE FOR IT.

I love these two.
Seriously.

This is another case of 'why haven't I read this author before' and I am so mad at myself for it.
At the same time, these Moo U authors are about to find themselves lots of new readers--especially if their earlier work is comparable to this.

Holdout is exactly what I needed today. And it's what you need too.

Holdout is part of Sarina Bowen’s True North world and the Moo U Hockey series but reads as a complete standalone. The characters are new or barely mentioned in other books. This is a roommate - turned relationship book and it’s done very well.

I’m just going to admit it, I ADORED Jonah. He is not your typical college athlete hero. He’s focused on hockey and school and nothing else. He doesn’t party or hang out with the guys, and he doesn’t know how to flirt. I truly enjoyed seeing the relationship of Jonah and Ryann come together.

This is my first book by this author but I will definitely be reading more from her!

Tbh,
It was so bad I wanted to give a 0, but that’s not possible so I gave it a 1.
First thing first, who tf works out without bra?
("She still wore the thin tank top, very much without a bra, and I slammed my eyes shut as her breasts moved with each crunch.“)

Ryann sees every muscle, every body part on the ml as hard. My man does not relax his muscles, he is just focused (😌) on flexing them all the time. That’s a dedication I need in my studying. Don’t believe me? Just watch:
"He leaned closer just as I put my hand on his incredibly hard and toned thigh.“
"I slid my hand up his side all the way to his arm. He was hard, everywhere.“

Otherwise, the ml (forgot his name) wines about his mother leaving him the whole book (it happened more than 2 years ago). Like fine, I get it, it is traumatic, but does it have to be his whole personality? When the mentioned mother tries to get in touch with him, he literally becomes a 5 years old. However, his moods swings and grumpiness, Ryann describes as being ‘focused’:
"You’re not grumpy. You’re focused.“ She hummed, nodding to herself as a hint of a smile played on her distracting lips“

This book pissed me off.
I do not recommend reading this, unless
▪️ you can connect with characters with 0 personality,
▪️you can handle no real plot
▪️ you can handle “emotional connection” whit-in 3 minutes the characters’ve known each other (meanwhile, claiming they are not used to opening up to anyone).
▪️you want to torture yourself (but for that, I have different recommendations (books which are even more painful than this one)).

Ratings:

1/5 smut quality

Out today, 2/15/21!!!
---
The first round of the Moo U books are all out today, people! If you enjoy these authors' previous works AND the True North world that Sarina Bowen has built over the span of many, many books, please pick these up!

Due to an unfortunate, or should I say FORTUNE misunderstanding, Jonah (J.D.) a hockey player on Moo U's team and Ryann, a GIRL, and sister of one of the co-captains of said hockey team wind up living together. Both are in desperate need of someone to share rent with and a safe, quiet place to live so it looks like they'll just have to weather this one out.

Things start off on rocky footing when both of them have issues surrounding worry of what Ryann's VERY protective brother might think. Jonah CAN'T have this mess up his dynamic on the hockey team and mess up his much-needed scholarship, and Ryann CAN'T have this mess up her relationship with her brother--the only family she has left after a terrible car accident took both of their parents' lives.

As you can imagine, even though these two have quite different personalities, they wind up finding comfort in one another. Comfort becomes friendship. Friendship becomes something else entirely. Unsurprisingly to everyone (expect maybe Michael, lol) these two can't deny the steamy chemistry and wind up hooking up. Once...Twice....and more until they realize that this could never have just been a casual thing.

Even though I personally couldn't really relate to either one of these characters due to their specific circumstances and family dynamics, I was instantly attracted to how comfortable they felt around one another. Ryann especially became an anchor for Jonah and really relaxed him and brought him out of his shell in a number of ways. Their chemistry was electric and because this was also the case in the previous two books, I can't wait for the rest!

Huge thanks to HeartEyes Press and Sarina Bowen for the opportunity to read this eARC in exchange for my honest review!

ARC received for an honest review

Book 3 of the #MooU series, and I said it after book2, however Holdout was my favourite of the series.

Jonah and Ryann's story was fun from the start. Their forbidden (by others, not themselves) relationship is full of fun and flirty banter, longing looks and sexual tension you could cut with a knife 🗡🗡🗡

We know from the first initial mix up to the end that this off limits thing is never going to work, and boy was it fun to watch them fall in love.

We also had a few sad bits that pulled at the heart strings.

Gah, this series. I need more of it. I mean, there are always news players coming onto the team, so we could surely get another 8 or 9 years out of it, right?

I have really enjoyed finding some new to me authors through this series, and can't wait to see what comes next in the World of True North.

I loved Ryann and Jonah in Holdout! This is the 3rd book in the Moo U Series set in Sarina Bowen’s True North World. I am really loving this series. Although this was my first book by Jaqueline Snowe it most definitely will not be my last. In Holdout she has written a sweet, sports romance with a somewhat forbidden storyline, a situation of forced proximity and lots of laughter, heart and heat.

Ryann is in search of a new place to live and answers an add that Jonah is looking for a roommate but they both get a surprise when Jonah realizes Ryann is a woman and not a man, and Jonah is also her brothers teammate on the University hockey team. Of course they immediately try to put boundaries and rules in place but they have undeniable chemistry that they just cannot ignore. They try hard to keep their relationship between just them but it is only a matter of time before Ryann’s brother finds out and how will this affect Ryann’s relationship with her brother and Jonah with his teammate? The story was beautiful and had an emotional component to it I was not expecting. Jonah is dealing with some parental abandonment issues and Ryann is suffering from the loss of her parents. I really loved how deeply they connected as they are both dealing with emotional pasts.

I cannot wait for more books in this series releasing next week to see what the other authors will bring this fantastic Moo U World.

Jason Clarke as Jonah was perfectly cast, he has that sexy growly tone that I can never get enough of and paired with Savannah Peachwood’s sweet/sultry voice, it made for an enjoyable listening experience.

I loved this book! This story is a part of the Moo U series, Sarina Bowen's True North Hockey Series. Jaqueline Snowe has written a sweet, hot, and sexy book! This book is narrated by Jason Clarke and Savannah Peachwood, who are both always one click narrators for me!

Daniel (JD) aka Jonah Daniels needs a roommate in his apartment to help pay the rent. Ryann is trying to make it on her own without constantly relying on her brother after their parent's tragic death. With a case of mistaken identity, JD thinks that his new roommate Ryann is a boy. They soon figure out thats a lie, and these two must find a way to make living together work. Ryann's older brother is on the hockey team and so is JD. The two know they shouldn't get involved, but can they deny their attraction?

Jason Clarke's portrayal of JD was amazing! You could feel the passion JD had for hockey, the conflicted stance he had for his mother, and the love he felt for his dad. Jason's story telling ability is incredible. I never have to guess who is talking because his character voices are so good! Savannah was fantastic as Ryann because she conveyed her tragic past and determination so well!

Overall Jaqueline Snowe has written a great book with great characters! I love all these hockey romances, and I loved how she developed these characters' stories with just the right amount love and steam. I am looking forward to more from this author!

I absolutely loved this visit to Moo U!

Jonah is a hockey player for the university, he is focused on school and hockey and sticks to a rather strict schedule. He needs a roommate and puts an ad out, with only getting one response. Ryann is in desperate need of place to live and quickly answers an ad for someone looking for a roommate. Well, both Ryann and Jonah are in for a surprise when they find out they are roommates.

I loved these characters. I loved how Ryann brought out a different side to Jonah and helped him somewhat relax and realize that he can still have fun but be focused on all his goals. There was plenty of tension between them and loads of chemistry that was brewing throughout the story. Of course, they both fought it. Jonah not wanting the distraction and Ryann keeping a promising to her brother about not dating his teammates.

If you’re looking for a roommate romance with some hockey goodness this is one to check out.

Adorable!

There’s something very special about socially awkward heroes. Jonah is amazing and I loved seeing him open up to Ryann throughout the story. The connection was just so genuine and Ryann is just such a freaking sweetheart. I loved the emotion in this one so much, plus it was steamy! I recommend you read this right this second.

I really enjoyed it! the characters were super fun and cute and layered, not too many unnecessary side characters as many romance sagas love to do, so this was a big win. I just think we could have used more action and drama, the whole "forbidden romance" thing relies on something that is resolved in a 5min convo😐

This was a nice surprise! I really enjoyed how both our MCs were trying to stay on track for scholarships and driven. I also enjoyed the name mix up portion of the set up for their meeting.

Overall this was such a fun quick read I had a blast watching Jonah open up to Ryann.

I loved this book!!!! I am loving the world of true north. Jonah and Ryann were fabulous. Their storyline and journey to fall in love was perfection. Would love to read more books about the secondary characters in this book.
