Today, we are diving deep into the realms of emotional intelligence and authentic leadership with none other than Phil Johnson—founder and CEO of the Master of Business Leadership program.

Phil's journey is as remarkable as his mission. Born a fighter, overcoming the challenges of prematurity and dyslexia, Phil transformed his perceived disabilities into catalysts for change and pathways to success. Following a life-altering decision at the tender age of 14, after losing his mother, Phil committed to a life of service, eventually leading to the creation of his globally impactful leadership program.

In Episode 94, Phil and I unpack the power of emotions in shaping our decisions and behaviors, discuss the invaluable role of emotional intelligence in our personal and professional lives and reveal the stark reality of its scarcity in today's fast-paced world. Apple’s focus on emotional intelligence and their undeniable success is a testament to the theory that understanding our feelings can be a foundation for innovation and change.

Phil isn’t just talking the talk; he’s also walking the walk—quite literally on his idea-inspiring 3 a.m. walks without distractions. He generously extends an invitation to connect with him, offering free access to his audiobook and sharing insights on how to engage with his Master of Business Leadership program, a transformative experience with a proven track record of success.

From Adversity to Triumph: The Inspiring Journey of Tamerus Augenstein | Ep 92

From Adversity to Triumph: The Inspiring Journey of Tamerus Augenstein | Ep 92

Today's guest is Tamerus Augenstein, a friend who has overcome a troubled past filled with mistakes and found his purpose through fitness. His journey includes numerous physical activities, but he hit rock bottom after a breakup, leading him into substance abuse and homelessness. With guidance from mentors, he rebuilt his life and now inspires others.

On October 16th, 2023, Tamerus posted about his one-year transformation, which caught my attention. I wanted him on the show to share his story in hopes of motivating you all. He reminds me of Marcus Aurelius' quote, "The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way."

Tamerus had struggled with identity during tough times but turned to God for direction. This shift led him away from destructive habits towards self-improvement and discipline through fitness routines and nutrition—key steps that helped eliminate vices like late-night indulgences.

Breaking free from others' expectations and finding your purpose can be life-changing. Once you discover what the universe or God intends for you, unnecessary habits and substances lose their appeal. You start to address the root causes of discontentment.

Conscious congruency is key – aligning with your conscience means pretending or escaping reality through altered states is unnecessary. Identifying negative habits, defining them as weaknesses, and then building strengths in opposition transforms your life.

Committing to self-improvement requires patience; instant gratification isn't sustainable. Instead, focus on consistent efforts over time – 100 days might sound long, however it's manageable and transformative.

Sometimes, we chase things thinking they'll bring happiness, only to realize they don't fulfill us. Growth involves learning from these experiences and understanding that the journey matters more than the destination.

Language shapes our reality – speak kindly to yourself, as words have internal and external power.

Invest in simple daily books like Tamerus’. They guide your thoughts and help you reflect on personal growth. Revisiting the same book shows how far you've come, like a video journal documenting progress.

In fitness, people overlook macros and mobility training. Macros are crucial for achieving goals, while mobility keeps joints flexible as we age. Incorporating activities like yoga or balance exercises into your routine is essential.

For finances, cutting unnecessary expenses is key. Allocate money purposefully: some for living, business, savings, and giving back through tithing or charity.

Finally, write down a vision of your ideal self – physically fit, financially stable, intellectually capable, etc., and then list what helps or hinders this goal. Eliminate distractions and build daily habits that bring you closer to this version of yourself.

Enjoy the episode!

Deliberate Evolution: A Conversation with Dan Capello on Personal Growth and Success | Ep 91

Deliberate Evolution: A Conversation with Dan Capello on Personal Growth and Success | Ep 91

On this episode of Social Chameleon Show, we have a special guest, Dan Capello, who has an incredible journey of personal transformation to share with us. Dan went from burnout and being over 300 lbs. to running his first Spartan race and realizing that his family deserved more from him. As a chef, Dan found himself nourishing others but neglecting his own well-being. Now, he helps leaders and professionals regain control over their professional lives.

During the conversation, Dan delves into the importance of being deliberate in life and shares his own weight loss journey and the trauma that led to his unhealthy habits. The episode also explores the significance of open conversations about mental health and trauma. Dan's upcoming book, "Deliberate Evolution," is a focal point of the discussion.

The episode touches on various topics, including the importance of understanding one's values and priorities when setting goals and finding direction in life. It emphasizes the need to make rational decisions by analyzing thoughts and separating emotions from the process. Reacting without knowledge and preparation can lead to unfavorable outcomes, which is discussed in the context of a successful rowing team with a singular goal, value, and priority.

Dan highlights the idea of evolving and becoming the person needed to achieve goals, pushing past one's potential for growth and new opportunities. He emphasizes the importance of being compassionate yet stern with oneself, using the example of not repeating past mistakes, like going off a diet and eating a whole box of donuts.

The episode also dives into societal views on burnout, such as it being seen as a badge of honor, and the speaker's belief that many people never feel good enough. The importance of understanding values, priorities, and goals, as well as being in tune with oneself, is stressed. Distractions and the inability to handle responsibility and pressure are identified as barriers to becoming a leader.

Enjoy the episode!

This year more people than ever will have a SHITTY holiday season due to the pandemic and economic instability. Whatever you're doing this holiday season to help your community, I'd like you to think of this as an option. My family will be donating food, fulfilling wish list items for the local children's home, and we'd like to give money to families to help cover some of their December expenses. All donations will help us amplify our efforts in assisting as many people as possible this holiday season.

***5th Annual Holiday Helper Agenda***

Food: I will be buying prepacked food bags put together at my local Sprouts grocery store here in Arizona that will be distributed to local families in need.

Book Review | Talking To Strangers: What We Should Know About The People We Don't Know By Malcolm Gladwell | Ep 85

Book Review | Talking To Strangers: What We Should Know About The People We Don't Know By Malcolm Gladwell | Ep 85

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true?

While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you'll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists. Court transcripts are brought to life with re-enactments. You actually hear the contentious arrest of Sandra Bland by the side of the road in Texas. As Gladwell revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, and the suicide of Sylvia Plath, you hear directly from many of the players in these real-life tragedies. There's even a theme song - Janelle Monae's "Hell You Talmbout".

Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don't know. And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world.

Madison Campbell: On The Frontier Of Sexual Assault | Ep 84

In this episode, I talk with Madison Campbell, CEO of Leda Health. Madison is a trailblazer and sexual assault advocate. After going to college to study epidemiology in space populations, Madison has become a well-seasoned entrepreneur. She’s been a TEDx speaker and led a software development company prior to Leda Health based in Lagos, Nigeria. Today, she is working hard to promote the autonomy and self-actualization of sexual assault survivors through Leda Health by developing and providing resources to help them overcome their difficult trauma.

We talk about her love of Elon Musk, which leads her to a new field of study, which leads her to study overseas, which leads her to be sexually assaulted, which is now leading her to revolutionize how we deal with and collect evidence in sexual assault cases. Yes, I know, what a crazy journey, and we get into all of this. These twists have put her on this path and have taken her to the frontiers of how we deal with evidence collection in sexual assault cases and the resistance to change. How she’s made it through the trauma -PTSD- of sexual assault and what her company is doing to help others make it through. Not just about being a survivor, being a thriver.

Susan Sharp: Getting People Unstuck | Ep 81

In this episode, I talk with Susan Sharp. Susan is a motivational speaker that helps people get unstuck. After a string of successes outside of higher education, including her book, Mid-Life Wisdom, and her art selected for use on the set of the Netflix drama Orange Is The New Black. She left life as a professor of 23 years in theatre and public speaking, to focus on her own speaking, art, and writing--all of which are about bringing a message of hope to people who feel stuck.  As a motivational speaker, she helps people get unstuck by breaking through the boundaries that are limiting them or the team and has them re-frame the problems they're facing. Her positive, motivational speaking inspires audiences to action. Whether it’s a mid-life rut, a lackluster workplace, or motivation to aim and dream bigger, Susan helps people make a lasting impact.

We talk about making the jump from a life with a safe and secure job as a professor, to jumping off the deep end into the world of entrepreneurship. She talks about the self-talk need to make the move and keep going forward. What the struggles were as a professor in this new world of teaching to the most sensitive person standard. Plus much more on dealing with unruly coworkers and navigating the risky uncertain self-employment world.

Lauren Midgley: Productivity Strategist & Author | Ep 76

In this episode, I’m talking with Lauren Midgley. After 25 years of working for 2 Fortune 500 companies in sales and marketing, Lauren launched her consulting business in 2010, helping small business owners be more profitable.  To reach her audience, she added being a speaker and an author to her marketing efforts.  The game-changer for Lauren and her business was in 2014, where she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

From that point forward, Lauren shifted her message to live each day fully, be satisfied and get the things done that matter.  Her Amazon bestseller, It’s 6 am and I’m Already Behind: Strategies to Get Caught Up reinforced that message.

In 2019, Lauren decided to do a personal project – sending a handwritten card she designed to those who mattered to her.  The card simply said, “You Matter to Me” in calligraphy with a heart.  The response back was astounding and deeply touched the recipients.  Lauren saw the need that others had to send the same message to their inner circle, so she launched the You Matter to Me greeting card business called Yes You Matter.

Lauren has written 2 eBooks on how to stay connected to those who matter and speaks to a variety of groups on “The Art of Staying Connected to Those Who Matter”, with another book coming later this year (2020).

Challenge your thinking. Challenge your wins. | Weekly Challenge

Did you do all you could, is this skill, is it luck? If you're winning at your job 60% of the time, that's a lot of opportunities for learning that you're missing. Don't miss that opportunity. Don't forget to analyze those wins, not just the losses, and see where you can get better.

Book Review: Thinking In Bets | Ep 75

Book Review: Thinking In Bets | Ep 75

Poker champion turned business consultant Annie Duke teaches you how to get comfortable with uncertainty and make better decisions as a result.

In Super Bowl XLIX, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made one of the most controversial calls in football history: With 26 seconds remaining, and trailing by four at the Patriots’ one-yard line, he called for a pass instead of a hand off to his star running back. The pass was intercepted and the Seahawks lost. Critics called it the dumbest play in history. But was the call really that bad? Or did Carroll actually make a great move that was ruined by bad luck?

Even the best decision doesn’t yield the best outcome every time. There’s always an element of luck that you can’t control, and there is always information that is hidden from view. So the key to long-term success (and avoiding worrying yourself to death) is to think in bets: How sure am I? What are the possible ways things could turn out? What decision has the highest odds of success? Did I land in the unlucky 10% on the strategy that works 90% of the time? Or is my success attributable to dumb luck rather than great decision making?

Annie Duke, a former World Series of Poker champion turned business consultant, draws on examples from business, sports, politics, and (of course) poker to share tools anyone can use to embrace uncertainty and make better decisions. For most people, it’s difficult to say “I’m not sure” in a world that values and, even, rewards the appearance of certainty. But professional poker players are comfortable with the fact that great decisions don’t always lead to great outcomes and bad decisions don’t always lead to bad outcomes.

By shifting your thinking from a need for certainty to a goal of accurately assessing what you know and what you don’t, you’ll be less vulnerable to reactive emotions, knee-jerk biases, and destructive habits in your decision making. You’ll become more confident, calm, compassionate and successful in the long run.

Digital Addiction | Ep 73

Digital Addiction | Ep 73

Do the digital, internet connected devices in your life serve you, or are you serving them? Americans check their phones on average once every 12 minutes – burying their heads in their phones 80 times a day, according to new research. Four hours is the longest time the average person studied was prepared to go before the need to check their phone becomes too much. A staggering 31 percent of people feel regular anxiety at any point when separated from their phone. Fewer more, 60 percent of people reported experiencing occasional stress when their phone is off or out of reach. Does this sound like you? Or is your thoughts 'I'm not addicted, I can stop anytime’. The sad truth is, you're not alone in this battle for your attention. With some understanding, support, and perseverance, we can make technology work for us.

Pharaoh Kelley | Ep 72

Pharaoh Kelley | Ep 72

Today I’m talking with Pharaoh Kelley. Raised by his mother in the Brownsville section in Brooklyn, New York, Pharaoh endured hardships from early on. Economic instability, family trauma, and depression remain constant throughout the years. Life presented only two choices: continue to live in a generational cycle, or rise above the circumstances and make a change. His vision of what he wanted life to be led him on a path, in which he conditioned his mind to allow him to make significant changes in his life. The Ultimate Gift is knowledge, and Pharaoh's main mission is to inform youth of all ages the ability to master their minds so that they can Master their lives. Pharaoh’s mission is to show the importance of having a positive mindset no matter their current situation.

Book Review: Why We Sleep | Ep 70

Book Review: Why We Sleep | Ep 70

Dr. Walker has made abundantly clear that sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when it is absent. Compared to the other basic drives in life—eating, drinking, and reproducing—the purpose of sleep remains more elusive. Within the brain, sleep enriches a diversity of functions, including our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotions, restocks our immune system, fine-tunes our metabolism, and regulates our appetite. Dreaming creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge, inspiring creativity. In this “compelling and utterly convincing” (The Sunday Times) book, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker provides a revolutionary exploration of sleep, examining how it affects every aspect of our physical and mental well-being. Charting the most cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs, and marshaling his decades of research and clinical practice, Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning, mood, and energy levels, regulate hormones, prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s and diabetes, slow the effects of aging, and increase longevity. He also provides actionable steps towards getting a better night’s sleep every night.
