Darkroom

Rate this book
As a top draft pick from a family of hockey royalty, I'm under so much pressure that I’m losing my edge on the ice. I need something to snap my brain out of this self-destructive stress-loop. That’s where Indi Briscoe from my photography class comes in. She’s flirtatious and funny one moment, sweetly shy the next.

But she’s cagey. She has secrets. Also? She’s a virgin. Did I mention the pressure thing? Maybe I’m crazy for starting something with her. But we can’t seem to help ourselves...

Warning: this standalone novel contains heat, heart, familial expectations, extreme milkshakes, and a hamster with deep thoughts.

Adorable!

Another funny, sweet, sexy, a little heartbreaking, college-y hockey romance.
I loved reading this.
I especially loved the hamster and AJ - poor guy!
Indi and Hudson are really perfect for each other. But of course they make it more complicated as it should be. She's so afraid to tell him her secret and ugh. Poor kids. But I really liked that we had some real problems this time. Not those unnecessary drama moments we usually get.
I really enjoyed reading this. I also really liked the parents this time - well his dad was a bit difficult, but totally fine in the end!

Like I always say - I could read these kinds of books every day for the rest of eternity!

I also wouldn't mind seeing this whole world on Netflix one day!

Can't wait to get more Vermont soon!

DARKROOM was an adorable + funny + sexy hockey college romance!! I loved reading it! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Hudson - he'll be sold out in no time!

I had a fantastic time with this romance! It’s no secret that I have been a fan of the books that I have read that are set in the world of True North so I was eager to give this newest offering a try. Once I started listening, I was hooked and I couldn’t wait to see how things would work out for Indi and Hudson. This was the first time that I have read Kate Willoughby’s writing and I had a great time with it.

Indi and Hudson are both college students. Indi is pre-med and is incredibly series about school. Hudson is one of the school’s star hockey players and is part of a family that has had professional hockey players in every generation. The pressure is on for both of these characters. They both end up in the same photography class and as partners on a class project. These two have fantastic chemistry with each other from the start and it seems to grow stronger each time they are anywhere near each other.

I really liked Indi and Hudson as a couple. I think that they had a lot in common and seemed to be very good for each other. I really enjoyed watching them grow closer as the story progressed. Indi did have a couple of secrets but I understood why she was hesitant to share them with Hudson right away. Both characters have some pretty big issues to deal with and challenges to overcome which helped them to see how important they were to each other.

Joe Arden and Victoria Mei did a fantastic job with the narration of this book. I think that both narrators were able to bring the characters to life and added a lot of emotion to the story. I thought that their voices really complimented each other. This was an audiobook that I wanted to listen to for hours at a time and the narrator added a lot to my overall enjoyment.

I would recommend this book to others. This was a wonderful romance with fantastic characters facing some pretty big challenges. I had a great time watching this pair move towards their happily ever after. I cannot wait to read more books in this series!

I received an audiobook ARC of this book from the publicist/author.

I'm really struggling with the review for this book. See I had moments where I was able to sit back and get lost in it, but the majority of the time I was surrounded in chaos and constant interruptions. And sadly, this ended up feeling more like an obligation than an escape.

I started off really liking Indie and Hudson but then I had moments where I wanted to slap them. And I felt like they had too many issues that made them seem a little whiney. Don't get me wrong, I can understand that they are human and insecure about certain things. But they both had good lives, surrounded by people who loved and supported them. So, after a while I was kind of over them.

Yet, I also know that a large part of my issues are my own frustrations being put on them. And I know if I read this last week I probably would have been more sympathetic and understanding. So, I feel like an arse picking on other people's issues just because I'm having a bad week and want to kick rocks.

The positives are that it was really beautifully written, there was no cliche crap. The relationship was sweet and I loved Hudson and how open and loving he was towards Indie. Because for most of the book he was book boyfriend goals. And there wasn't anything wrong with the story or the relationship development and I'm absolutely going to check out the other books by this author when I'm not being a cranky witch.

This was an overall entertaining new adult hockey romance, but sadly it didn't quite hit the mark for me. As much as I liked both Indi and Hudson, I didn't feel their connection and the transition from friends to more felt contrived. They certainly have a memorable meet cute though (if you can call it that LOL) and there were quite a few sweet moments like the "prom". I also liked how the topic of virginity was addressed and that it wasn't an all consuming topic in the story.

Although I appreciated the diversity of the characters, I'm not quite sure how to feel about the Chinese rep in the book. I think Darkroom raised some thoughtful discussions about culture and belonging, but it also felt very stereotypical in its depiction. Ultimately, I think that there was too much going on for both characters and it ended up making the story feel very overwhelming and disjointed. I also didn't think that any of the issues raised were ever sufficiently explored or fully resolved. One scene in particular was extremely hurtful and I did not feel moved by the apology or "grand gesture". The resolutions that were presented felt very convenient and the entire ending of the book felt rushed.

Overall 3.5 stars
Performance 4.5 stars
Story 2.5 stars

I really enjoyed the narration by Joe Arden and Victoria Mei. This is my first time listening to Victoria Mei and I was definitely impressed. Both narrators voiced a variety of characters uniquely (male and female) and I had no problems differentiating between characters.

Darkroom was such a refreshingly original story! This was my first foray into Kate Willoughby's writing and I was so pleasantly surprised. The characters were multi-dimensional, the banter and dialogue were smart and sparky, and the emotional depth was on point. I was sucked in immediately, and found Indi and Hudson's story to be the exact sort of fresh air I'd been craving!

I loved the evolution of Indi and Hudson's relationship. Their initial interactions were playful and funny and got me right in the sweet spot where I get all googly eyed and swoony about a couple. Their connection felt organic to me and the depth of emotion seemed to grow as the story progressed. Their issues were real life issues - but not anything that I ever would have expected and I loved that.

Also, I was a little wary of that hamster with deep thoughts thing, but it somehow totally worked for this story. It was an unexpectedly adorable component and it made me smile so much!

I did feel like the ending felt a little rushed. The big real world issues they were dealing with were tied up a little too neatly and ended a little more abruptly than I would have liked. However I still enjoyed the story very much. I might have just liked to dive even deeper into these fascinating, lovable characters. And, you know, maybe a little more groveling (what can I say, I'm a sucker for groveling).

Overall - this was a fantastic addition to the Moo U series. It was engaging and fun, but also tugged at my heartstrings and gave me that delicious ache in my chest. I loved the time I got to spend with Indi and Hudson and will absolutely be checking out more from this author in the future! ~ Shelly, 4 Stars

Hudson Forte is a hockey player at the Moo U, he comes from a family of NHL players and he feels the pressure to always play well without any distraction. Indi Briscoe is a good student always focused on her studies, she was adopted in China when she was few months old and her dream is to become a doctor to help children.
They have a class in common and when they pair for a project they easily become friends. They are suprised when they understand each other so well even if it looks like they are very different.
Will they take some time to explore their feelings or will they be too busy chasing their dreams??

I loved Hudson from the start, he is a nice guy, not at all conceited even if he is part of the NHL royalty, while I had to get warm to Indi’s personality, she is insecure and I can easily understand why but I can’t take her when she leaps at the worst conclusion without even making others explain.
They are very cute and sweet together, I appreciated how they helped each other to feel better with themselves. Indi helps Hudson to find a way to survive to the incredible pressure everyone put on his shoulders and to see his real worth, Hudson in return makes Indi feel beautiful and special in her own skin.

I liked Darkroom, the storyline was interesting, the flow smooth and the wording easy to read but I felt like the ending was a little rushed, I’d liked to see how the main characters adapted to their new reality.
Overall a good read.

This is one of those stories that might surprise you. It surprised me. That is nothing dramatic for drama’s sake. There are unique plot points you may have read about in the past, but I’d bet not that often. It’s an early very new adult romance that read exactly as it should have yet I never wanted to stich an icepick in my eyeballs #winning

It took quite a bit of story before we got Indi comfortable enough to open fully to Hudson about her deep-rooted insecurities, and that felt very organic. It wasn’t an overused dramatic insecurity and I also liked that as well. It played out exactly as it should have as far as I’m concerned but I’m just one person in this fishbowl, I mean world we live in lol, so …

Hudson’s pressures, as cliché as they might be, also had a very real and realistic tone to them. Don’t get me wrong, I honestly wanted to slap someone over them because, *me shouting* HEY PARENTS, STOP DOING THAT! *end shouting* His pressures happen all the time and are a very real part of a lot of people’s lives in all kinds of circumstances and it just made the entire story that much more realistic to me.

I thoroughly enjoyed Indi and Hudson navigating the journey into romance which bring me to my one tiny #eyetwitch … the story just stopped LOL I mean it ended, but I was like reading and then *crickets* That’s me trying to humor up the fact that the end might have needed a bit more fleshing out. Again tho, just one person in the fishbowl so …

4.5 Dear parents, stop with the putting pressuring on your kids for this that or the other. Just let them live,k. STARS

First time author for me. I jumped ahead in the series since I snagged an audio.
This is narrated by Victoria Mei and Joe Arden.
I've listened to a lot of Joe's (awesome) narrations. I don't remember any college age though. Joe altered his voice to fit a younger hero. He also does a brief bit of a young boy's voice. A minor character related to the hero.
Victoria Mei is great voice & I do want to listen to more from her. She reminds me of a cross between Erin Mallon and Vanessa Edwin.
Holden is an ice hockey player for the Moo U team ( Univ of Burlington, VT) The Heroine, Indi is a Premed major that is close to taking her MCAT exams. Indi and Holden run into each other and then happen to get into the same photography class.
Indi is incredibly shy, but becomes friends with Holden. They become attracted to each other. I love their chemistry. Holden's a great guy, sweet to Indi, but has a lot to learn about building a relationship.
Indi is 21 and I think Holden's around the same age too. He's been drafted by a pro hockey team, but still needs to keep up his grades and hockey playing.
Indi has been holding in a secret that she's been dealing with her whole life.
The supporting characters add a lot to the story. Indi's bff, Ruby; her parents & Holden's bff /teammate' Hudson's parents (his dad is a jerk, but Hudson's mom tries to keep him in line)..There are cameos from Moo U books.
I gave this 4.5 stars, the ending was a little rushed but the lead up was so good!
I really enjoy this author's writing & want to read more of her books. I'm loving all the True North spin off books: Moo U, Busy Bean and Vino & Veritas books. Try them! all are standalones!

Dark room by Kate Willoughby is the seventh book in the Moo U series. Indi and Hudson’s swoony romance can be read as a standalone.

Hudson comes from a long line of hockey heroes, and in the back of his mind he’s always wondered if his family legacy is the only reason he was drafted in the first round. He knows he’s a good hockey player, but is he really good enough for the professional leagues… I loved the slight vulnerability that resides in Hudson’s mind. There is no doubt about it that this man brings the swoon when he walks into a room, but seeing a fragile side to him, especially before and after a game was icing on the cake.

And then we have Indi. Indi has lived her life hiding behind her defense mechanisms, and for good reason. She was born in China and was immediately abandoned to an orphanage due to the port wine birthmark on her face. She was adopted by an american family and all the bad was put behind her….. Until elementary started, and the bullying began. I learned something from Indi’s story… teenagers can be monsters. My heart broke for Indi and the challenges and insecurities she had to battle throughout this novel. She was challenged not only when it came down to her self esteem, and self confidence but also when it came down to her self identity.

Having been abandoned to an orphanage as a baby, Indi found herself trying to avoid anything and everything that had to do with the country in which she was born. She not only saw it as her birth parents abandoning her, but also she saw it as the country abandoning her. And being Asian American, she dealt with her fair share of criticism over not wanting to have anything to do with her birth country.

But as soon as Hudson stepped into her life everything started to change for the both of them. I loved seeing Indi slowly find her self worth and I loved how she started to let go of the past and move towards the future. Ah! This was the redemption story I have been waiting for!

Darkroom gave me all the feels! I loved Hudson’s swoony, sweet, and sexy vibes just as much as I loved Indi’s girl next door and I’m going to save the world vibes. These two were perfect in their own ways and together. Their chemistry was OFF THE CHARTS!! At the end of the day though, I just needed a little bit more oomph towards the end to push this one up to a five star read.

I’ve been a fan of Kate Willoughby’s hockey romances for years and when I saw she was writing in this “universe” I knew I had to read it.

DARKROOM is about an Asian American girl who was adopted at a very young age by a white couple. She’s grown up not really embracing her Chinese heritage and feeling a bit out of place in both worlds. Adding to that is the fact that she was born with a Port-Wine birthmark on her face, the source of much bullying in her younger years and what has led her to covering it up with tons of makeup all the time.  Now in college, when she starts dating a star player in the hockey team, her fears from bad past experiences make it hard for her to be able to open up.

One of my favorite things about Kate Willoughby’s books is her love of hockey and how it shines through. I admit this wasn’t as much an important part of DARKROOM as I had anticipated. Nevertheless, this book does tackle some issues that players have to deal with especially when it comes to mental health. I was glad to see that our hero leads by good example and doesn’t shy away from seeking help.

You guys know by now that I’m not the biggest fan of insta love and at times this felt too insta-lovey for my taste. But as far as these two being a cute couple and extra supportive of each other, can’t complain.

If you are looking for a quick read that is sweet but has depth and character growth, then check this out. I was happy to go on this journey with our main characters and especially our heroine as she had a lot of baggage to overcome. Do I think it’s the most believable that she was able to get there so fast? Not really. Was it a bit of a “love fixes all”? Maybe.

While DARKROOM isn’t the most believable story, I certainly appreciated the insight it can give into some struggles. And in the end, I think it handles all of them with grace and in the right way. Even if a bit rushed.

As always I’ll continue to wait for another hockey release from Kate Willoughby.

I like the dynamic in this book. Again we get a meddling parent it’s like these books are YA not NA.
I really liked Indi and I like that she lets her roommate in but also listens to her.
Hudson is personable guy and I liked him but again hated how his father was a meddler. His mother kind of lets it happen I hate that.
The two of them together is great even when she lets him see the real her.
Loved the narration for this one
On to the next.

The Darkroom is book #7 in the Moo U Series, written by Kate Willoughby in Sarina Bowen’s True North World. The story is a sexy sports/college romance. It is entertaining with a heartfelt and emotional component that was unique and refreshing.

Hudson comes from a long line of family members that are successful hockey players. From the moment he was young he has felt the pressure to perform on the ice and make it to the NHL. He has some big shoes to fill following his fathers 19 year NHL career. He is feeling the pressure and the last thing he needs is the distraction that Indi will bring to his life but he cannot seem to stay away.

Indi was adopted from China as a baby and has lived in the US her whole life. She has a vascular birthmark that has given her a number of insecurities that she has battled all her life. Indi is smart and studying to become a doctor. I admittedly didn’t love Indi from the start. Her insecurities often made her come across as judgmental and defensive and I struggled to connect with her. I think that Hudson brought out her better qualities.

There was something so vulnerable and raw about the connection between Hudson and Indi. Indi’s insecurities about her looks were never an issue for Hudson. He only sees the beauty in her and I loved that.

Joe Arden brings such passion and heart to his stories no matter what his role is and as a rugged hockey player he completely delivered. Victoria Mei is a new to me narrator and I loved her portrayal of Indi so much.

This might be my favourite of the series. Indi and Hudson's story is really sweet and relatable. And the author also raised some deep issues and write them really well into the story. I really enjoyed this story. It's a well-written and entertaining story with wonderful characters.

This is another great addition to the Moo U series.

I have really been enjoying the Moo U series in Sarina Bowen's World of True North. It has introduced me to so many new authors, and narrators as well. Kate Willoughby's Darkroom was great- I want to avoid spoilers, so I will just say that the heroine, Indi, was someone I could relate to immediately. My daughter and Indi have been through a similar journey and I was excited to read Indi's story. I thought Indi and our hero Hudson had fantastic chemistry and I enjoyed seeing their journey from classmates, to friends, to lovers. Joe Arden and Victoria Mei gave excellent performances on the audiobook. Joe is of course a fan favorite, but Victoria was new to me and I enjoyed her voice very much.

Okay. Sexy Hudson Forte is up and his special someone has maybe a tiny bit of baggage she needs to deal with before the two of them can be blissfully happy together in the long term. To be fair, Hudson also has some baggage to deal with. Just so you know it's not all one sided.

First up: Indi. Let's start by saying the lady has some self image issues. Between her birthmark (which got her bullied and teased relentlessly when she was younger, so I completely get where she's coming from with her coping mechanisms) and her disconnect with her heritage, she has a few things to work through. It takes time for her to come to terms with both.

As for Hudson, he's got big shoes to fill when it comes to his family and hockey. He's also been taught that he should suck it up and play through whatever's bothering him (okay, it's not said like that exactly, but it was the idea that some of the things he was dealing with weren't something that should bother someone like him) and that leads him to ignore some issues that could have been dealt with earlier. That said, once things start moving in the right direction, he makes big strides.

Family dynamics, pizza, self-image, more pizza, and some steamy kisses. *thumbs up*

Great book spoilt by a stupid ending.

I loved the disability aspect of this story. Two mcs were great and the issues around stress and pressure was good to read about too.

Also the issues around indi's pws and her Chinese heritage was really interesting. I read a review that said the book incl racism themes? Hmm bizarre because to me the only person who was racist was indi herself about her own heritage so maybe thats what the reviewer meant. She did seem hyper sensitive about her Asian looks and for me it was hard to create a picture in my head of her.

Hudson was frankly too good to be true, I mean other than his major fuck up he was too perfect. He needed the fuck up quite honestly.

Loved the writing up to the end.

But seriously I'm pissed at that pathetic ending.

H finally gets his hearing aids and score a hattrick and thats it. No epilogue to show us he was able to play in nhl just an assumption! No details about how his team mates reacted, whether he did anything about hearing awareness, how the nhl team reacted etc? The ending was just bullshit!!!

Seriously its lost a full star for that.

How to not end a book!!

Into the light!

Indi has spent a lot of her life hiding who she really is. Bullies during childhood made her life a nightmare and she struggles to trust people. When she accidentally bumps into Hudson Forte, a hockey player, little does she realise her life is about to change and she will finally show her true self. Hudson has always had a crush on Indi and it's not until they work together on a class project that he finally gets his chance. This was a great read that looked at some serious issues and did so with tenderness and clarity. Indi's port wine birthmark is a huge no go for her and she struggles to allow anyone to see who she really is. Hudson gives her the confidence to do just that. When it looks like Hudson has health issues, Indi is the person to push him to seek help. This book was expertly created with sensitivity towards important issues

ARC received for an honest review

Book 7

I found myself liking this installment better than the past 2 I have read in this release.

Hudson and Indi had a more realistic relationship in my opinion than the past 2. Though, we still do get the cliche manwhore sport star and the virgin (which I am a little bit, no, a lot over these days).

I do like their dynamic together, and I like that their problems are more real. None of the OTT drama for drama's sake. Though I did want to talk some sense into Indi at times, and tell her to open up about what her issues are -it was nearly 3/4 of the way in and I was all "girrrlll, why you doing this??"

And what is it with all the hockey dads being absolute a-holes? Here was another one that I just wanted to nut punch!

It may also just be me, but I was looking for more pages at the end -it just seemed to suddenly end.

And I now feel that the hamster needs his own story - maybe just some chapters from his POV of the shenanigans in the Hudson household!

I have been so deep in Moo U hockey over the past week and a half that I am going to be so confused reading another series with different characters when I pick up my next book, lol! I will say that I am very impressed with the range of topics that themes that this series has presented so far. There have been a lot of very different characters experiencing very different things and I really appreciate that.

This book features Indi and Hudson. Indi was born in China and adopted by an American couple when she was a baby. She has a port-wine stain on her face that she now covers up very thoroughly with makeup after being bullied for years as a kid. For a good chunk of this book she also denies any and all attempts to connect with her Chinese heritage until her roommate helps her realize that part of the reason why she has so vehemently rejected that part of herself is because she associated it with her birth parents having abandoned her at a Chinese orphanage. Delving into that part of herself really got to me because I'm sure plenty of other people struggle with that very same part of their identity as well after being adopted.

Hudson comes from a hockey dynasty. There has been a member of his family in the pros since the league was formed about a hundred years ago. He struggles with some really intense pressure and anxiety over preforming well in front of others and also find out over the course of the story about a medical issue involving his hearing that also really takes a toll on him as well.

While I overall really enjoyed reading about how all of those aspects of life affected and shaped Indi and Hudson both separately and together, there were times that I became frustrated with Indi especially. It's brought up one time by her mom after she blows up at Hudson but it could really be overwhelming for me when she went from 0-100 with her anger and verbally lashed out at people. Sure it was realistic but I just didn't vibe with her as much as other characters. Still, it had a great ending and I was so happy for how both of their journeys were wrapped up by the end!

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

You can’t help but say “thank you” to the author for stories such as Kate Willoughby’s Darkroom. Its truth lies in its provocation regarding issues related to cultural identity, beauty standards, and mental health in sports. You might think, “wait...how is this entertaining?” Yet, with the right wordsmith, these messages conspire into a story that reads easy and entertains its readers.

Set in the Moo U world, Darkroom tells the story of Indi and Hudson. While Indi and Hudson meet when Indi walks in on Hudson with her former roommate, that isn’t the true meet-cute of Darkroom. Their true meeting occurs on a night when Indi rushes out to grab food on campus and runs literally into Hudson, causing them to spill their food. Indi has always harbored a crush on Hudson since walking in on him, but her sense of self is fragile, given that she has a Port Wine Stain birthmark on her face. Usually, she covers it with makeup, but the night they meet, she covers her face with a scarf and he sees her birthmark. Embarrassed, Indi rushes away, only to realize that Hudson is in her photography class. Hudson and Indi are intrigued with each other, and when the professor requires them to partner with a classmate, Hudson and Indi become partners out of their interest. As these two get to know each other, they realize a true connection and chemistry. Eventually, they fall for each other, but their lives are so complicated that you wonder if they can find their happy ending.

Both Hudson and Indi are remarkable characters. What I love about Willoughby’s characterization of them is, at first glance, for example, Hudson seems fairly innocuous. Yes, he’s a typical “jock,” meaning that he plays the field and he prioritizes hockey over everything else. Yet, as Hudson’s journey progresses, we realize quickly that he struggles with anxiety and a serious health issue. Willoughby creates these moments in his character’s journey where he is like many of us: unwilling to seek help because it shows a sign of weakness. In those moments, she allows her heroine, Indi, to speak wisdom. When he takes Indi’s advice, he is often rewarded in big ways in this story, underscoring the idea that assistance doesn’t mean weakness; it means empowerment.

Of the two, Indi is the most complex character in that she works through ideas about traditional standards of beauty which become complicated by her birthmark plus Indi’s sense of cultural identity. This too was an insightful choice for Willoughby’s Darkroom. In Indi’s characterization, we find an Asian-American character, bringing more diversity to the Moo U world. Even more, she has complicated her Chinese background by denying it (for fair psychological reasons). With her, though, Willoughby develops a roommate who oftentimes speaks truth to Indi, and she challenges her to embrace her cultural background. Indi’s evolution in Darkroom is my favorite part of the book...well, second favorite part.

My favorite part is simply Hudson and Indi’s relationship. Except for one or two moments in the story, Indi and Hudson have a mutual respect for each other, and it creates this big love for them. Willoughby does a great job of pacing and progressing their journey, and I found myself continually motivated to keep turning the page until I finished the book. Kate Willoughby’s epilogue and bonus epilogue will make you swoon because, quite frankly, Hudson and Indi together are swoon-worthy.

Once again, Kate Willoughby is a great addition to the Moo U series. Providing even more diversity and a couple who challenge you to think about mental health, beauty, and culture, Darkroom, by my estimation, is another hit for the World of True North.

Moo U Hockey is a college hockey romance series in the World of True North, created by Sarina Bowen. Each novel can be read as a standalone, however the series will feature some of the same characters that you will come to know and love. If you loved reading this book, I would also recommend reading Sarina Bowen’s True North books and the other True North series (Vino & Veritas; Busy Bean Cafe; Speakeasy Taproom; and the rest of the Moo U books).

In Darkroom, Indi and Hudson are unlikely partners in the photography elective that they are both taking, but hit it off easily. But Indi is holding on to a few secrets that could change how he sees her.

Kate’s story about Indi and Hudson was thoughtful, romantic, and original. I love Kate’s books and this one did not disappoint (with a great cameo nod to one of her original characters in her other series). Kate does an amazing job of weaving subtle and realistic complications and exploring it in ways that are caring and heart-warming. I loved Indi and Hudson so much!

I highly recommend Kate’s Moo U book, Darkroom. You’ll laugh, you’ll cheer, and your heart will warm for these two. This book is easily one of my favorites from this author. Huge fan of this author . . . one-click now! *I have received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

Indi Briscoe and Hudson Forte first meet at the school cafeteria while she was trying to hide her port-wine stain from the rest of the world. Couple days later, they officially meet in photography class at Moo U and even have lunch together which both Hudson and Indi kind of mess up. Hudson later on apologizes to Indi and they work on their class project together. Indi had some issues, first with her port-wine stain on her face and with how she identified culturally. I was happy that Indi was Chinese-American and she went through the discovery of her culture and a new love for herself but it went by too quickly. Hudson was a celebrity on campus for being part of the hockey and making captain this new school year as a junior. Hudson had a lot to live up to because his entire family has played in the NHL since its inception. Indi and Hudson were a cute couple but I didn't feel the chemistry between them, there were plenty of cute scenes in the book with the two of them but chemistry wasn't there. It also felt like Hudson's medical condition came out of nowhere even though there were plenty of clues throughout the book. Indi and Hudson were very supportive of one another and when they messed up they did try and work things out.

Hudson has a lifetime of obligations and pressure on his shoulders when it comes to hockey. But he has given himself one class to breeze through, photography. In this class he comes to meet Indi, a pre-med student who has just as many obligations and pressures. But together they realize that maybe it is more than just their goals and together their goals are easily achieved.

I enjoyed Hudson and Indi. I felt that they both went on a journey of self discovery together and it was enjoyable. But I can't deny that I felt that Indi was super quick to jump down Hudson's throat and it annoyed me. Hudson and Indi both had their hardships that they had to overcome and I liked how it played out in their story - that they didn't overlap, that they had had to go through them individually and then relate to them after the fact to come back together as a couple stronger than before. My heart broke for both of them, each of their story was unique but relatable and I highly recommend it.

4.5 Stars for Darkroom ( Moo U #7)
Another new author and another great addition to the Moo U World this time with Indi Briscoe and Hudson Forte’s friends to lovers story.
Kate Willoughby is another new author that I’m struggling to understand why I haven’t come across her before now, well that’s going to change as soon as time permits.
Hudson needs a distraction from the pressures of playing hockey and it seems a woman in his photography class has caught his eye. The attraction is instant but this couple start of as friends and it’s not surprising that real life issues put pressure on the jock looking for a NHL career and the girl looking at her own goals in life. Will this couple survive the pressures from their chosen careers or will their relationship finish before it even starts......
This is a great addition to the Moo U World, I adored Indi and Hudson, this friends to lovers story is captivating and felt real because of the issues this couple endure to get to the HEA they both so deserved. A well written, entertaining story with wonderful characters.

Thank you to Heart Eyes Press for an advanced copy for my honest opinion*

This was one of my favorites in the MOO U series and covered so many serious yet relatable topics. Willoughby covered adoption, race, beauty standards, anxiety/health, self-acceptance, virginity and did so with sensitivity.

It's impossible not to love Hudson, but Indi was such a great character. They were really good together and their chemistry was fantastic. Hudson was a riot and I loved his openness with Indi and the way he got her to come out of her shell a bit. Reading about Indi's struggles with adoption and her heritage was really interesting. There were so many elements from her relationship with her parents to her self discovery. Hudson dealt with some medical and mental health issues and was able to find someone to confide in from Indi to a member of the team he was drafted to. His struggle with being part of a famous hockey family also took a toll on him, so it was a relief he found a place of his own.

Willoughby has other hockey romances if you enjoy this one!

Loved it!

I was sold on this book within minutes of starting to read. Basically I was rooting for Indi practically from the moment she was described, and then her description of pizza toppings basically sealed the deal. Also, the fact that it’s not just the good stuff but also her limitations and hang ups that come out through her interactions, all make her very relatable and endearing. Similarly with Hudson, he is so likeable, and it’s evident through his interactions with others, be it Indi, his friends, team, or even his dad. Yet there’s the way he’s struggling with the pressure. Seriously, there was a point where I just wanted to hug both him and Indi. Normally I want to bang the characters' heads for being foolish, so this was a nice change!
As an aside, Deke the hamster as well as AJ and Ruby really made for enjoyable side characters. I absolutely loved Ruby and Indi's relationship! And I found the photography class, with its various assignments, very engaging to read about. I’d enjoy attending it too! I wouldn’t have minded more about that, actually. The only other thing I wish is that the epilogue (that comes in the author's newsletter) had been part of this book, because I was not ready for their story to be over yet!

A sweet, hockey romance following Hudson Forte, future NHL hockey star, and student at Moo U, who meets and falls for med student Indi Briscoe. Indi is focussed solely on her studies, she wants to change the lives of children born with abnormalities, it’s a personal journey for her. Both Indi and Hudson have many insecurities, yet they come across as being happy with their lives, looks can be deceiving, and they are both harbouring secrets, that, hopefully together they can overcome. An emotional, sweet college romance narrated by Joe Arden and Victoria Mai, Joe in his usual manner brings the story to life from all viewpoints.

the downside of this is the insta-lovey trope. but these two aren't the worst it's just so not what i want to read when college students are the characters.

compared to the rest of the books there is less focus on the hockey aspect however issues regarding the mental health of the players is discussed a lot which was refreshing. another refreshing thing was somewhat normal parents except for holden's dad at times..

this whole series is a quick read basically but you get more depth and character growth in this book.

I enjoyed the uniqueness of Indi and Hudson. They each have an element of themselves that stands out and I really liked reading about it. It really made for great character development and very interesting storylines. Hudson and Indi are a cute couple that clicked from the start and you see why they make such a great match. I really enjoyed their read.
