Our team would like to take you with us to the “Around the whisky world in 80 days”. To learn, to engage and to see the world of whisky through the lens of a guardian “spirit”. By the end of our global tour, you will know where the best places are for whisky aficionados & collectors to visit.

Hong Kong culture was born in a sophisticated fusion of East and West. It not only kept many Chinese traditions, but also experienced a baptism of western culture. This situation led to the diversity of its culture and the people there are open-minded to accept variety. To have a better understanding of this cultural phenomenon, you can take a whisky tour with us.

Lifestyles in Hong Kong are urban-centric and cosmopolitan, with the majority of the population being highly educated. The international mindset that comes with its global economic positioning, as well as the influence of British governance, has integrated values of the English-speaking West into the Asian society. While 92% of the population is ethnically Chinese, the culture differs distinctly from that of mainland China.

There is a world of attractions in Hong Kong. This bustling city is known for its luxurious offerings, including beauty, haute cuisine, and iconic designer brands. With a bit of creativity and know-how, you can take your trip to this vibrant city to the next level.

Here are experiences and things to do in Hong Kong that will leave you feeling special.

Dive into arts and culture

Hong Kong’s status as Asia’s leading arts hub has been established over the past decade. The city is a favorite spot for art enthusiasts, artists, curators, and buyers worldwide. It plays host to an impressive range of art galleries, museums, and many creative destinations.

Spend a day at Hong Kong Arts Centre, a non-profit multi-arts institution that is known as the contemporary art and cultural hub in Hong Kong. Catch exhibitions, screenings and performances that can widen your horizon and fuel your soul.

Looking for unique art pieces that are also an excellent conversation starter? Art stars Pedder Building and H Queen’s are located metres from each other. You can discover some of the city’s most influential galleries between them, including Hauser and Wirth, David Zwirmer, Pace and Pearl Lam (H Queen’s) and Gagosian, and another Pearl Lam (Pedder). The Hong Kong Art Gallery Association can help recommend private consultants and guides for local insight.

Fly and dine

Make the best of your trip to Hong Kong by appreciating it from a bird’s eye view. A helicopter ride from The Peninsula Hong Kong could be your best bet for an unforgettable trip. To complete the luxurious experience, conclude it with exclusive dining at an award-winning restaurant.

You can choose from two available packages — Fly and Dine or Fly and Tea. The Fly and Dine program consist of an 18-minute flight-seeing tour and lunch or dinner for a maximum of six persons. The Fly and Tea program is an 18-minute sky tour and teatime experience for groups of two to six. Both trips will give you a completely different perspective of the stunning Hong Kong landscape.

While Hong Kong may be small in size, there is definitely nothing small about its bar scene. Dynamic, global, cosmopolitan, and vibrant, are just a few of the words that we use to describe Hong Kong and its bar and drinking culture. It’s an industry in constant evolution, with huge growth in the modern cocktail scene and a surge in the rebirth of speakeasies (most likely thanks to the sky-high rent prices).

Ginger

Ginger is a modern, intimate speakeasy with a very impressive 400 whisky collection complete with a strong Scotch and Japanese whiskies selection. This is the brainchild of whisky aficionado and critic Tony Leung, who travels around the world to visit distilleries and trade fairs to find new labels and expressions.

Mizunara: The Library

We couldn’t have a whisky bar recommendation list in Hong Kong and not include Mizunara: The Library. A Japanese whisky bar that has been a long-time favorite of the Scots Gold family. Located in the area of Wan Chai, this intimate bar is tucked on the fourth floor of a stark and harsh commercial building, a contrast to the bar's elegant interior setting which is made complete with a bar made out of a single piece of Japanese oak (Mizunara).

Tiffany’s New York bar

Located in the Intercontinental Grand Standford Hotel, Tiffany’s New York bars is a throwback to New York during the 1920’s Prohibition era, complete with a live jazz band for your night’s soundtrack. While a visit to Tiffany’s makes you feel as if you’ve been transported into another time, there is certainly nothing about its 250 whisky choices that are reminiscent of the prohibition days of the 1920’s

One of the outstanding features of Tiffany’s is its in-bar maturation program. Where known labels are given an extra 6 months finish in a range of small casks right on the bar back. Make sure you ask their bar staff what they have maturing and have a taste of something truly unique.

Nocturne

Compared the other bars on your list, Nocturne can’t boast over 200 different types of whisky (theirs is a more humble 150), but you won’t notice the difference. The whisky selection at Nocturne is a well-curated one. Japanese whisky enthusiasts will enjoy Nocturne’s offerings but will equally be impressed with their Scotch, Bourbon and Taiwanese selection. Much like their selection of whiskies, the cocktail list here is small but very well curated mainly consisting of the classics such as a Highball or Moscow Mule made with peaty Laphroaig.

Leave some space for the true distillery culture experience.

Hong Kong Whisky

The author of Hong Kong’s most famous comic “Old Master Q”, is Wang Jiaxi. It began in 1962 in Hong Kong newspapers drawing comics using his first son Wang Ze’s name as a pen name. He later changed it to an individual volume which has become the most recognisable comic from Hong Kong. Using comedy to satirise the shortcomings of human nature, “Old Master Q” immediately struck a cord with locals by capturing the microcosms of life in the city. It was later translated into different languages and exported to countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and India, bringing a slice of Hong Kong’s sub-culture to the world…

Two Moons Distillery

The idea for Two Moons Distillery came about in 2017, when Ivan and Dimple were creating their own gin infusions for cocktail events, but were never quite satisfied with the results. After gaining valuable insights from meeting and working with distillers abroad, they decided to set up their own distillery, despite no one else (at the time) having opened a gin distillery in Hong Kong.

Told by many it was “impossible”, the duo reached out to HK Customs who more or less said “why not?”, and together both sides embarked on a two-year learning journey. It was refreshing to hear Ivan talk of the collaborative experience they had working with Customs — a far cry from what you might expect when dealing with bureaucracy, particularly in the context of alcohol production.

丹丘蒸留所( 香港コンセプトストア/試飲室) [Tankyu Distillery Concept Store/Tasting Room]

To tell the story of a city of contrasts is no easy task. When Joseph and Kit set out to make Hong Kong’s first ever gin, they were on a mission to capture the fission and fusion of the city’s colliding cultures. We work closely with local farmers and suppliers to understand the terroir of Hong Kong. By selecting aromatic, evocative botanicals, our gin captures the very heart and soul of Hong Kong, and transport the drinker to the city’s colourful streets.
