Shifting the Dials is a call to bin the toxic mental model that is work-life balance and an offer of what to replace it with. Work-life balance is a static, oppositional, binary approach which only sets us up for disappointment. A 2D model in an 4D world. Instead, I'm sharing a new mental model - The Dials - as well as perspectives on many too rarely talked about topics in the world of careers and life.
The Dials is a flexible, open, empowering approach to working life - not work and life as separate entities, but as a series of constantly evolving and coexisting components - your dials - reflective of an honest assessment of YOUR values, goals, and priorities - the dashboard upon which those dials sit upon. The Dials is a method that encourages you to expand your notions of both 'life' and 'work', and then fashion a sustainable, nourishing and most of all, realistic way of knitting all those many pieces of a rich and varied existence together, dynamically and responsively. Because dials are designed to be adjusted: up and down, as needs, opportunities, and seasons of life change.
On top of all that, the book dives DEEP into what shifting your dials out there in the real world involves. The book looks at resilience, at quitting, at how a life helps rather than hinders a career. It touches on finding career fulfilment, and all about the trades every single person makes in life and in work (my personal favorite chapter!). As well as the important topics of making an impact with our lives and breaking taboos around money.
Writing this book has been an incredibly humbling experience. I am so so proud of it, and slightly terrified about sharing it. This isn’t a book about being a banker, or a yogi, or a mother, or an author. Though there is lots of that in there. It’s about how each of us can find a way to live true to ALL aspects of ourselves, sustainably and realistically, in a world which is very much not set up to do any of that with ease. Because the more of us who can, the more likely we are to create the very world we would like to see.
