STOP BOMBING HOSPITALS

I have seen with my own eyes the destruction and devastation caused by illegal, targeted attacks on healthcare facilities. In Syria we witnessed countless attempts to destroy the hope of our people.

27 April 2022 marks 6 years since the brutal attack on Al Quds hospital in Aleppo - an attack you see in For Sama Film. It is on this anniversary that we are launching a global action to show solidarity with all brave medical colleagues who are saving lives under fire.

The international community has failed to hold the perpetrators of these war crimes to account. This is why Russia has been allowed to repeat these crimes over and over again - testing their war tactics over many years and now targeting healthcare facilities in Ukraine.

Medical communities around the world, let us unite in solidarity and in voice, as we demand that the perpetrators of attacks on hospitals and other healthcare facilities should be held to account.

Dr. Hamza al-Kateab

ABOUT AL QUDS HOSPITAL

Six years ago on 27 April, Al Quds hospital was destroyed by intense Russian bombardment. Over 50 people were killed in the attack, including four of my medical colleagues, and five others were injured. Al Quds was the last hospital in besieged eastern Aleppo, but we kept going in a makeshift location for another seven months until we were forcibly displaced in December 2016. Below is footage of the attack from For Sama film.

ATTACKS ON HOSPITALS & MEDICAL WORKERS

According to Physicians For Human Rights, since 2011 there has been a total number of 601 attacks on 400 healthcare facilities in Syria attributed to the Syrian Government or Russian Forces, but not a single person has been held accountable for these crimes. One of the hospitals included in these shocking statistics is Al Quds hospital in Aleppo, Syria, which was managed by Dr. Hamza al-Kateab and featured prominently in award-winning For Sama film made by his wife, filmmaker and activist Waad al-Kateab – who are leading the global action today.

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, crimes against humanity continue to rise. The World Health Organisation reports 149 attacks on medical facilities since 24 February 2022.
